I managed to secure what I think is a great deal to go somewhere for a few days that has many different Christmas markets but I'm wondering what equipment to take with me. 6 weeks to go (not that I'm counting) but something small and light with a fast lens (used Lumix LX mark 1 with f/1.7 lens) or Olympus mirrorless with 12-45 f/4 or my used D500 with f/2.8-f/4 zoom? The Nikon will be a lot heavier and less discrete to use whereas the LX probably won't draw many people's attention, and the faster lens may be advantageous on dark winters evenings. What words of advice (or otherwise) do you have for me?

The lighter the better is my philosophy. As you say discretion is the be all and end all in this situation, so smallest is probably best.

My favourite time at the markets is around dusk - when it's properly dark I don't find it as interesting. Think about what you want to shoot (wider scenes or closer details). Either way there's a compromise to be made, does the faster lens counter better high ISO performance from a larger sensor camera?
I'd be inclined to go for the faster lens option unless the noise is hideous, as being more portable you can shoot at will and it isn't a burden.

Call me the Grinch if you like but I get the feeling of same when ever I visit a Christmas market, London, Brussels, Köln same identikit huts and wares.
That said everyone likes different things and I hope you have a good time.
What I tend to use as a walk around camera these days is my EOS M6 mk2 with a 15 to 45mm kit lens, assuming that the Olympus mirrorless is similar, that would be the camera I would be taking with me, wack up the iso and have fun.

My old Canon S120 is about as small as it gets and will slip into a shirt pocket.

Wish they made something like that still. My Coolpix S640 was terrible in low light and had a rather slow lens but you really could take it anywhere and get much better results than a contemporary mobile phone.

Last time I went to one I took my Canon 5D with a 24-105 lens on. Discreet be damned - I don't feel the need to hide the fact that I'm shooting and I didn't meet with anyone complaining about it. These things are being photographed every second on phones afterall.

Of all the gear that you mention (and that which has been mentioned in other posts) I'd go for the LX100 - no hesitation.
The Canon S**[*] cameras are very small - fitting easily into a pocket, and offering good IQ. However, my ancient S90 is rather sluggish in operation, when compared with the Lumix LX100. Of course, the later models (S100, S120) might be less sluggish than the S90, but I've never used either of those models, so can't comment.

I have an old S90 lying about somewhere. Nice camera in its day but not in the same league as its successor the S100.

That's good, Willie. It means more choices for Ivor (Chris).

The thread title could also refer to a thief looking for a nice camera to steal, so be careful.
Crowds of people, lots of children, packed into a small area... are your Covid inoculations up to date?
Just over two months to go before life returns to normal and supermarkets again stock all their regular lines, including all the ones currently unavailable to make room for all the Christmas rubbish. Am I the only person who finds the Christmas orgy of pointless consumerism and pretend religious belief boring?
