England have been shite for a while and we've scabbed ourselves a quarter-final. We aren't getting past France or South Africa if we get to the semi-final, but its flattering that kiwis and saffas are still obsessed with England's results, than their own teams. I feel sorry for the Scots, but the nature of world rugby means at least one tier one team will always miss out.

The problem is they can probably still beat anyone around, I certainly wouldn't be smug about facing them. In the knock out stages anything can happen.

I think that it's vindication for the new rules on player eligibility meaning the tier 2 teams can be more competitive after the teir 1 teams have poached their best players. Just a shame some nations are abusing this rule (Dempsey for Scotland, Zach Mercer in talks with the French about switching allegiance for example).

If you think the British/English press love to build up now good a sporting team is look at how much more they love to rubbish them...

I don't remember any world beating type copy for a very long time. In fact my memory is of "where did it all go wrong" type articles.
I was a rugby player and thought that I understood the game but I have no idea why England are so poor. Many, if not most, of the players are capable but, as a team, they just don't cut it.

TEAM - together everyone achieves more...basic concept, not there in some players eyes/mindset. If you get the eleven/fifteen/ however many best players do you end up with the best team...not always

TEAM - together everyone achieves more...basic concept, not there in some players eyes/mindset. If you get the eleven/fifteen/ however many best players do you end up with the best team...not always That's self evident however it doesn't answer the question why.
I've played in teams where, for example, first choice players have been unavailable and weaker subs inserted. It can change the whole dynamic of how the team plays. Maybe I'm blind but I don't see any glaring weaknesses in individuals in the current team. I don't see many world beaters either but, as you say, the whole ought to be better than the sum of the parts.
Who can forget the teamwork in 'that' world cup. A score was needed. JW trusted the forwards to successfully make a couple more plays to get him the crucial few metres closer and the forwards trusted JW to slot the kick when they had done their stuff. That's how teams should think and play.
