From my bed I can see the branches of a large Silver BIrch. Through this hard weather I have seen many birds, mainly the tits, apparently feeding on something that they find on the bark.
Given the temperatures any idea what it could be?

Insects/tree sap? You can make bark butter to spread on branches. Never tried it.

Winter Moths? They are rare up here but more common down your way. IIRC the females climb trees to release pheromones and attract mates. There should be spiders around too. I can find these ones on trees year round..... I forget their proper name but they make sheet webs and are very common.
