Thought I might show How I had a Go to 'Adjust' a scanned 6x6 tranny bearing in mind what a 'Judge' would say when i submit it for a PDI Comp at Brentwood & District Photographic Club -- Before and After images see what I did thinking what a Judge would spot and mark down-- On Number 3 I added a 'Border' but it does not show up here much -- at Club all the Old Established members know how to add 'Strokes' if there is a lot of Black Areas which would blend in with the dark area of the Screen ....

I prefer the second image best. The third is too obviously adjusted.
But what do I know?? Ha!
I do note how you cropped down on the image and agree with that.

From a non club person: I don't like the border. I agree the light sky behind the fountain is a distraction but I like the extra height it affords to the fountain so would have significanty darkened down that area but kept the space. Partial flowers at the edge of the frame annoy me, I would have cloned them out of used an expanded canvas and re constructed them, easy wit Ai. I think the edits are too dark loosing interest in the water below the fountain.
Like I said above I don't do clubs, you do and know what they want to see. I also don't see eye to eye with the RPS despite holding one of their distinctions which was a free gift with my degree, the only person who was impressed with it was my Dad.

Might have lightened to top of the pub ( to the right of the shot) to bring bit more detail in. People seated either too sharp or too soft, not sure if they are important or not, best to decide that when taking the shot, aperture wide open or stopped down a lot more. Kind of depends on what the subject was and what the contest was asking for.

The van leads me in, the pole makes my eyes raise and come down to the customers and the sign is the final resting place for my eyes before going around again. In the second, the sign is the first thing that catches my eye and then I wander up to the customers. Not so satisfying from my point of view.

Strange, I like the border. Well done it looks good. I must say if I didn’t know the van had been there before I would like the second picture but now that I do know I don’t like it in the second version. I can still see the shadow and if I’d never known above the van I would’ve been none the wiser. Well done with photoshop, l used to have “life’s too short to learn photoshop as my bio on a blog that I used to write!😂

Some years ago AP published a review of some editing software, with 'before and after' images of a shot with a telegraph pole or lamp post in the shot, that was removed using the software. My polite email pointing out that a prominent shadow caused by the object was still in the 'after' image was not printed. There is no problem like this in your shot, but I have seen strange shadows in other images that indicate an object has been removed. It might be interesting to deliberately leave a shadow like this in an image to see if the judges noticed.

No Luck at Brentwood & District Photographic Club PDI Comp -- Judged by a member of Upminster Camera Club -- he gave it 13 out of 20 !
