My wife had her U3A meeting this morning, so I dropped her off, parked the car in town, and took a camera for a stroll. The Lone Star bar. The footpath, George St - the roadway has been excavated, and all the services are being replaced. Looking down one of the alleyways off George St to the back of the Medical School.

I stopped for coffee at The Good Oil - where some of the road workers were buying their morning tea. This is part of the bus hub, with First Church spire in the background. Forty or so years ago, I spent some months installing a telephone exchange in the ground floor of this older hospital building - the space is now a cafe.

Part of the "new" hospital building, opened 50 years ago. A replacement hospital is being built a few blocks away. The Conscientious Objectors memorial, at the top of Albany Street. Above the garden is one of Dunedin's pedestrian zig zags - the street is too steep for traffic.

It isn't a highway - that is two blocks to the east. The City Council looks after this road.

Mea culpa, John. it's a hangover from my time working in Highway Engineering, where we habitually used the term 'highway' to talk about any road - not just major roads.

Thank you John. Great to look around the place. A question from me. What is U3A? Anyway, good to see such a tidy place and being maintained too. Interesting to hear the 50 year old hospital needs replacing. Hmm. Concrete trouble? Or simply tired and getting not fit for purpose?

The older parts of the hospital date to the 1930s, and there is one block from the 1960s. The whole thing is seen as not suited to modern medical practise, and some of the buildings contain asbestos. The new hospital has two blocks - outpatient services, and the inpatient block.
