Sitting in the Bells, I had been about to go but Scots Jim brought me a pint when suddenly he looks out the window and says it looked like they were filming something over the old civic hall opposite
I looked over and thought "That's not filming"
The top floor was on fire it went up really quick one minute there was a bit of smoke and a small flame, the next the whole of the floor was on fire and massive clouds of smoke After about 10 minutes the police came in the Bells and turfed us all out. Somehow I managed to take my pint with me and ended up watching it from the other side of the police cordon
Bit scary the fire people were saying if the wind changed direction they might have to evacuate both sides of the road down to the bridge, which would include my house but luckily after about an hour they put it out
Just hoping no one got hurt as that floor is flats

I think the developers might be in the brown stuff, if the report that the alarms didn't sound is correct. There is no way that should happen in this day and age. Thankfully it looks as though everyone is OK (excepting Lesley's pint, which finished up terminally drunk), but that could have been a whole load nastier...

Having just read the report on the beeb website my first thought was that it's mighty close to Lesley, based on my memory working down there in the mid 1980s. Thank goodness there are no casualties

Did you get back in the pub for another pint o.k ? And return the glass. A good excuse to go back for another.

On a serious note , this is the reason I really wouldn't like to live in a flat . At least in this case the fire was above everyone , and they all got out O.K , but for their to be no working fire alarm is madness .

I'm not so sure that she is "Ok", Geoff..... after all, her evening in the pub was disrupted.
Serious matter, y'know.

On a serious note , this is the reason I really wouldn't like to live in a flat . At least in this case the fire was above everyone , and they all got out O.K , but for their to be no working fire alarm is madness . My daughter lives in an old house converted into 6 flats. One good thing about her landlord is the regularity of the fire alarm checks when the fire alarm people come into the flats to check the systems. If they are not in, the landlords agent will let themselves in (with prior warnings etc) so they don't get missed.

In the village we are getting 2 storeys of flats built over retail units built over a basement car park with charging points.
