My wife had a meeting, this morning, so I dropped her off, and then parked the car along George Street, the town's main street. The central city has major works going on - this picture is looking north along George Street. Looking south from the same spot. St Andrew Street crosses George Street - this is looking east.

I toddled east down St Andrew Street, then north along Great King Street, until I came to Hanover Street. This is looking along Hanover Street back to George Street. The building on the right is part of the Medical School. I carried on along Great King Street for a few blocks, to Dundas Street. Most of the buildings in this picture are student accommodation. Back up onto George Street.

I walked south along George Street to the car. This end of the street has a lot of large houses, built for the well off a century or so ago. These days, students live in them. Opposite my car was this house, which was the home and studio of a wedding photographer, Cecil Pattillo, in the 1930s and 1940s. Looking south along George Street from my car. The nearest spire is Knox Church, and the more distant the town hall.

Pity that the traffic cone has migrated to such a nice place

They've certainly DoneEdinburgh street names. Although we have a St Andrew Square rather than a street.

They've certainly DoneEdinburgh street names. Although we have a St Andrew Square rather than a street. There was a legend that the street plan of Dunedin was the same as Edinburgh's...some of the street names are the same, but the plan was done locally by surveyors before the first Scottish settlers arrived in 1848. The centre of town is an octagonal space, called, naturally, The Octagon. An octagonal street, Moray Place, runs around the Octagon, a block back. George Street runs from The Octagon to the north, and Princes Street to the south.

Posh Newtown houses....I think that's where some woman has recently been getting bother for painting her front door pink! There's a York Place in Edinburgh too.

What the map doesn't show is how steep the streets are, particularly on the inland side - the left side of the map. Most of the flat area of the town is reclaimed from the harbour. York Place is particularly steep.
