Having read an extract (on FB) from Digital Photography magazine, on Fay Godwin and who influenced her photograhy, I must say I'm not surprised at the results. Ted Hughes. That's like sipping deadly nightshade.
I have to say I am not a lover of the pretty landscape and I do prefer something I can look at and see something different every time I look at it - but - I'm not sure about Godwin's images inspired by Ted Hughes.

I'm going to (respectfully) disagree, Kate. I've enjoyed Fay Godwin's work for many years, with no knowledge of the 'Hughes influence'... and since I liked her work without knowing about any influences, I think I'll just carry on enjoying it!

That's interesting. Do tell me what you like about her work, I'm truly interested. I'm not averse to dark or gloomy or just this is how it is photography. I got into European and East European 'darkness' many years ago and loved their almost anarchic view of the world and their rebellion against pretty perfection. Perhaps I haven't seen enough of Godwin's work to feel an affinity with it.

I agree about "pretty landscapes" , Kate. They rarely do anything for me. Rather than me waffling on in this post about my reasons for liking Godwin's work, I'll offer you this link. I think this bloke says it better, in a 12-minute Youtube video, than I ever could on here. Incidentally, you might find some of his other Youtube videos interesting, too.

I hate to say it, since I was of the same opinion initially, but he has grown on me. OK it's not a reflection of the norm, but it does highlight the section of the population we'd rather not identify with. We look away, but he doesn't.

Only just skimmed the article and google both Fay Godwin and Martin Parr for seconds I prefer the black and white photos to Pars colour’snaps’ am I being unkind? On only minuscule exposure to either I find her work more pleasing.

I have to admit that although Martin Parr seems like a very affable and decent bloke, his style of photography isn't really much to my taste.

A bit grumpy today, Willie? No. Today has been fine and quite productive and enjoyable. Just cannot stand the vapid affable money grubbing arsehole.

Growing up near to York I would try to visit exhibitions at the Impressions Gallery when ever I visited the city, I think I must have first seen Martin Parr's work when I was in my early teens. At the time many of the people in his pictures seemed quite ordinary, they looked like the people of Hull or our West Yorkshire hill farming relatives. At the time I did not think he had any influence on me but looking back at transparencies I took, I now think he may have.
I would have been fourteen using a compact camera, people generally ignored me and let me take pictures.

THat's a cracking picture of life in Hull. My kid sister went to Uni there. Didn't stick at it though, and then went to St George's hospital in London to train as a nurse. We visited her once in her student household. That's my experience of Hull.

I like Fay Godwin's work. I didn't know about the Ted Hughes bit though. I looked into her stuff a bit more when I was photographing 'Nearly There, Yet'. Her work was about fighting for the right to roam as I recall. Mine was about the fact that if you haven't got money or a car, there's very little roaming to be done for a lot of folk.
I also like a lot of Parr's stuff too. I feel as if I know the people he shoots. I see them all the time. And it doesn't matter if it's the plebs or the toffs - he uses the same lens for everyone. I tend to think it's an affectionate one.
