Having had comments about non display of Google photos links, I 've been looking at finding a free alternative offering direct linking, a search gives a few lists of options I'm attracted to Imgur or Postimage from the posted reviews any comments or other suggestions - excluding Flickr.

I dunno about anything other than the not to be mentioned service.
Curiously, although my mac doesn't show your image of the coloured sky when your post is quoted, your original post does show a thumbnail today (although I am sure it didn't yesterday). The "name" of the file (stripping out the path) given by google is:
"AIL4fc_L63sbAmm6Vug4cyy5hOE7jirIKqjr1aZ0hUEO2GqSmQelCOJKqUpNpViPXIs3i_zX8V6YRLygcIsRsxvW53ev5mIpw0a_NaO_eLbMnTChy3kYQ-c6SIRjmJYug_htZ50qBTP5IZpa3g6821GmrasHenXfyDHgX8-jREOG5kfxuN7vG3PneEzLz_J3WPcA5O59UNYkCdvQJYwzgWlr4cCahIg5-pR6eNSRfGVu318NXRor-8nu70K3h7cXWf4xSU1TcVICBvu6OZaF_WfnXlXB514dLxKpHzoSklDkEbFByP2WpYDtNfUagx6iHIqJxrxInhuP3BNRqUuDfW1pQjiSjPUtaS0IcKtyNv8T9fmYSi_xnH9Hrm6XhsQlMQkKGb-ftV_KRh1_CMO66PMLS4ZkY4ieRo2MonqvGerVMMca1KM0pVa3xl2_JAo2nFK5LaxVHsRtCOaHVks6b2lFoAnYSHZsqcJfmdGgAX_0J8GguHTtsUbr316YW8xvexBTERhvtUWaxqo5OKrxujS4U9yJAsJPlYnQjWoDBLKnRGuPChio4N9xTSHBtj03BQmgKOkVu1GoyXWTTBORK10DnAl_2BA9UO7VBDqq9xFOhRKw3Lj6Zm0AM8vWvhFGcR3azZYeDDl5vBR5GaThC3mLD5TWK1-4i0Rb_cuJYFuqESteLIvCf2U_jgvSN4xdVLBkixyYgLqu4Xre9sg_FQHe8DORj8q0EieLfIpo9lp2-xPELDcHc8zcVrd22ktF310JPQUiJRl3l1WiSOrzn_-TMQAKPEkwju_bhu-GMlKPF8cwbFAJFwdzLhVWbIraPGN2G72__rZBxfxFxpSXVGZ9MmSNi-rRqhsYd7KnS9cD7RJ9m35ala4Ymc9ruAyhK2g-n9OsiHPwvwT2eOyO_3TTtLrz3w=w761-h511-s-no"
which I can understand might be interpreted as something other than xxx.jpg that is expected.

Why not Flickr? Probably the same reason Mike doesn't like Facebook? As far as I'm concerned, Flickr is fine. It can be free. You can make images private - so what's to fault? I've used it for more years than I care to remember. Never had any problems.

I'm the same. All images can be made private and linked on here very easily. I personally hate it on forums when there is a thumbnail image shown which you then have to click to view (as on here with direct uploaded images), so much so that I often don't look at them any bigger than what they are on the post.

Same, I often just ignore them. Also (as I have posted before) I think, for this site, it is rather taking advantage of Martin to use attachments over links.

If I was allowed to, I'd suggest Flickr too.
Regarding uploads to the forum, it's cheap at current levels of use and if it means I get to enjoy people's photos that I wouldn't otherwise see then I see it as good value. It seems most uploads are to the jokes/funny pictures thread. I would say that copying over as an image from Facebook a piece of text with a colour background is probably taking the piss though.

What’s a decent paid site cost ? I used to pay thirty quid a year twenty years ago for good size and extra bandwidth . More than paid for by google adds but that was a lifetime ago
