Just been browsing news snippets.
I find certain things amusing. One being news on HSBCs enormous profit statement. The bit that amuses me is calling the bank British - and the news that Asian investors are pressurising the bank to concentrate on Asian countries more and European ones to lose out.
Here's a copy of part of Reuter's news item. Seen 1 Aug23 HSBC LONDON, May 24 (Reuters) - HSBC (HSBA.L) is reviewing a possible exit from as many as 1 in 5 of the countries the lender operates in to sharpen its focus on Asian expansion, Chief Financial Officer Georges Elhedery told Reuters in his first interview since taking the role.
These reviews, which could see the British bank deciding to sell or streamline businesses in 12 countries, follow pressure from Chinese shareholder Ping An Insurance (601318.SS), which wants HSBC to prioritise growth in its money-spinning Asian business which generates 78% of group profit.

I know, I'm weird, finding things like this interesting and amusing, but my brain works in weird and wonderful ways...

I'm getting ready to go out so I can't look it up but I think HSBC is registered in London - moved from Hong Kong - so it pays its corporation taxes here and earns money for the Uk economy.

Hong Kong Shanghai and Birminham Midshires IIRC to.
Also, IIRC, Hong Kong and Shanhai Bank tried a takeover of RBS and only after they were beaten off did they buy Birminham Midshires to buy their way into the UK and thereby European markets. It would have been after Andy's bedtime though so he won't remember.

Now they are closing branches in the UK (2023). They closed a lot of branches here in Bournemouth & Poole years ago, those left seem to have a row of ATMs, no counters and one member of staff to cope with queries
