Brian Bilston - Days like this.
A Christmas gift. It's nice to tease my mind and raise a smile or thought.

Just finished reading Squeaky Clean by Callum McSorley. A most excellent read so long as you don't mind a wee bit Scots flung around. He's going to be appearing at the local book festival in March so I'm hoping he has another book in the pipeline.

Not reading this currently but reminded of it in a comment I made re the book The Shadow of the Wind. It's pretentious, verbose and a boring never ending period of flatulence by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.
The series I did love was the Siri Paiboun Mystery Series. Colin Cotterill Dr. Siri Paiboun is pulled out of retirement at the age of 72 by the new Communist government of Laos to become National Coroner. Though he is dubious and his medical background does not qualify him for the job, his new position allows him to identify murder victims.
It transported me there! Recommended for pure escapism.

In The Ditch by Buchi Emecheta
One of the women at our reading group was complaining that she didn't like the story because the narrator (and the book is somewhat autobiographical by all accounts) left her children to fend for themselves while she went to work and/or school herself. I thought back to my own childhood and I think we were regularly left to fend for ourselves. Perhaps it's a generational thing?
