Let's end the speculation about my middle name right now. I was named after my godfather, my dad's uncle Wilf. What does the W stand for?

Either that or they were all in witness protection. Wilf was known as John Dorothy was known as May George was known as Bert Francis was known as Charlie Albert was known as Ben Violet was known as Beat Ronald was known as Nobby Even those who went by their given names used the accepted abbreviations. Ah, the Joint Matriculation Board, they were the mob under whose aegis I did my O and A-levels. I always wondered what had happened to them...

Bob, Jim, Liz, Bill, Ted,... Once upon a time many moons ago I used to work as an administrator/techncial publisher for a contractor to the MoD. I spent a lot of time around naval types. One of the most annoying things about spending time with naval types is their habit of calling people by specific nicknames based on their last names, physical appearance or place of birth. So anyone with the last name of White is called Chalky. Anyone from Wales is known universally as Taff. Anyone with the last name Clarke is known as Nobby. Anyone with the last name Walker is known as Whisky. There is absolutely no concession to the fact that there might be six people in same building from Wales, or three with the last name Walker. They are all called Taff. They are all called Whisky. Among the contractors we also seemed to have quite a few people who were generally known by names other than that found on their birth certificate. This was pre-internet. One of my jobs at the time was booking flights for folks. Whose proper names I did not know.

Merged into the NEAB, then into the AQA. Headquarters still in Manchester. Friend of mine did a fixed term contract on some hush-hush project with them (AQA) a few years back (4 or 5, I think), many of their procedures, processes and contracts were still from the JMB days, apparently.

The best one was Little Alma, who was bigger than her aunt, Big Alma.

The older is of noticeably short stature - and thus was of necessity a bit of a thug in his youth ayrshire being ayrshire - is just plain Hugh.

Nobody knows why my dad gets called Nobby, even him. It wasn't a school or work nickname and everyone including his mother and siblings called him it. There's no connection to the surname Stiles or Clarke either.
