...the smallest is a Canon branded 16MB (? I can't check as I am not at home) card which came with my G9 and allowed one or two test shots with your new camera. That's one I'd forgotten... When I bought the D30 (2nd hand I might add) it too came with a 16MB card (Nikon branded oddly enough). Even though the D30 is only 3Mp it was barely enough for a few large JPEGS - RAW wasn't even an option... I think it's still stuck away in a draw somewhere...

It seems odd to me to have more cards than you need. Revisiting this thread, define "Need" in this context please.

Too many. I do not need however you define need. My obsolete XQD and SD cards work fine. I do not do video. I like to have cards that fully exploit the capability of my cameras. For D500 that implies XQD. I have them. For slightly upmarket Z the cards should be Cf express. I don't have them. No big deal. I will buy them when and if I need them.

Honest answer, I haven’t got a clue I’ve been shooting digital since 2007 and in that time I’ve never reused a card once it’s full. I just put it into a plastic storage box (shoe box size) and buy another. Usually for every card I fill I copy onto a usb stick, both are then archived separately.
