Reading a thread on DPReview, complaining about the cost of CFexpress cards, it became apparent that many users have only a single memory card that they format and reuse after each shoot. I thought this strange and asked about it, to find that many of those who responded find it perfectly normal that one should simply reuse the single card.
I have 11 XQD cards and would like at least one more, preferably four so that I have several sets per camera. I put two cards in a camera and use them, in overflow mode, until the second one is nearly full the put in two more and format them. I download pictures after each outing but don't format the card/s. The removed cards remain as one of a number of back ups until they are needed.
Am I alone in using more than one set of cards, indeed am I alone in having multiple cards?

It seems odd to me to have more cards than you need.

I have numerous cards but only one in use in any given camera. Transfer/back up images, then format and shoot. If I've a particularly valuable set of images I'll keep them in the card as another backup and buy a new card. They aren't expensive, but having too many is like having 4 kettles when you only use one at a time. (Generalisation, I realise there are folk like Geoff who want, even need, multiple card shooting setups)

I have one card per camera slot, not counting the old cards from old cameras because I don't use the 8 GB (and smaller) cards anymore. I've standardised on 32 GB. I think I have only twice filled a card (the first card on 2 slot camera). The cards in my Fuji ( a 64 GB CFExpress card and a 32 GB SD card from the camera it replaced) can hold rather more raw files than I keep in a year.
I delete all the files off the card after they are transferred to the computer and backed up. I don't always format the card. Maybe every 10th time the camera is used - or thereabouts.

It seems odd to me to have more useful cards than you need. Fixed that for you. I have many old cards, mainly small and slow sd but also the old type Compact Flash. These old cards are only slightly useful. They work with old retired cameras.
For regular use I have 3 XQD and 3 sdxc UHS-ll which I consider as 3 pairs. 2 pairs are in cameras one pair is spare.

I ... They aren't expensive ... Really? Have you seen the price of CFexpress cards?

I ... They aren't expensive ... Really? Have you seen the price of CFexpress cards? Definitely a shock. Although my camera works with an SD card in slot 2 I decided to fill slot 1. The smallest card I could find was 64GB and it cost something like £125 direct from Western Digital, and that was much less than I could find retail.

I mostly use 256GB cards these days - cards that mean I don't need to change when on a job, or generally when on a holiday either - my experience is that the biggest risk of image loss comes from the process of changing cards, either because you miss a shot, or (very rarely) because you corrupt the card when changing it (if it's still writing, generally not an issue these days), or indeed physical loss of the card. I always carry a spare, just in case, and frequently stream to either my phone or laptop whilst shooting. When I don't, I download fairly frequently, but don't format the cards until I've at least 2 copies.
How many other cards do I own? A fair few, but mostly long-retired.

Guilty as charged! One in each camera slot (currently 5) At least two, if not three similar back-up/ rotational use cards and also some micro sd cards used in kindles and phones etc. 60 in all but hang on there are smaller capacity cards as well, from 16mb upwards.

Have about 6 or 7 sd cards 32 and 64gb As I tend to download images straight after a shoot then format, the sd card can stay in the camera for months on end
Perhaps I should rotate the cards from time to time
Have had a couple of cards go dud in the past, perhaps that's why I'm a little reluctant to let lots of images build up on a larger card

That's sd cards, also have a mmc card and 2 sd to CF adapters. Now thumb drives, that's a different kettle of worms...

I have perhaps six or seven SD cards and the same again for CFcards. However that's only because when we used to go on holiday I'd just keep filling them up until I could transfer them onto the computer at home. I really just use one these days - shoot, upload to the computer, reformat and use again.

I ... They aren't expensive ... Really? Have you seen the price of CFexpress cards? The post about how I use memory cards references -unsurprisingly enough - how I use memory cards!! 64GB 200 mb/s XDSD is enough for several days of shooting for me. 32GB is plenty big enough too but the cost difference was so trivial I went with larger. I don't shoot video.

I've got four 16gb CF Cards and four 64gb SD cards.
They get used, the files get copied to my computer (and my back-up drive) and then the cards get wiped and reused.
