I really don't get the attraction of that thread. By the number of 'hits' I'm clearly the odd man out.
Can anyone explain?

Humanity, alongside many other forms of living creatures, likes to (from time to time) engage in activities which could be considered 'fun'. Given the diversity within the species not all find the same activities to be fun.
Hope that helps. If not, you'll be equally bemused by the thought of tens of thousands of people gathering at Wembley to watch some men kick a ball around today.

No I get sporting conflict even though much of it isnβt to my taste.
I understand the tribal loyalties, the chance to see world class skills, experiencing high emotion, the thrill of the day out and possibly seeing your enemy vanquished. I get the uncertainty of the conflict, the bit of luck that turns the tide, the companionship of the rest of my tribe. Above all I get that there will be an outcome.. one tribe will win.
Contrast all that with word association. No skill, no luck, solitary and no outcome. I see no fun!

No skill, no luck, solitary and no outcome. I see no fun! Mick If you can't see the skill in the connections there's no hope for you pal.

I personally find it fun when after putting a word I think what the response will be. Certainly I put some words in on purpose knowing zou or Martin will no doubt respond as I expected them to.

A love of language, its quirks, its double meanings, its humour and its dark side. Bonded by a common language understood by some and not others. Brain exercise.
Dare I say, comprehension? Yes. Fun.

A love of language, its quirks, its double meanings, its humour and its dark side. Bonded by a common language understood by some and not others. Brain exercise. Dare I say, comprehension? Yes. Fun. I generally agree with several of the answers on this, but particularly this one. Setting up an obvious answer, sometimes getting it, and then sometimes people deliberately avoiding that obvious answer - well it's a little like playing chess with humour and psychology as the playing pieces at times. Definitely fun. No skill, no luck, solitary and no outcome. I see no fun! Mick I just can't get my head around this point of view, it just seems to be so, well, wrong, for want of a better word - so incorrect, so untrue, in the sense that it doesn't remotely chime with my feelings (and clearly those of others) and in fact is exactly the opposite of how I view it. Obviously I'm not trying to challenge the validity of your views for you Mick, you're perfectly entitled to think whatever you want, but I just don't get it, and I actually do at least try to understand people's arguments, even if I vehemently disagree with them - but the skill, the luck and the fun seem obvious to me, it's certainly not solitary - very much a team game - and lots of outcomes throughout, albeit clearly no overall result. I'm not sure of that actually answers your question or not - I suspect if you think as you have indicated, it might still not make any sense to you, for which I apologise. But still, wouldn't life be boring if we all thought the same? The beauty of it is that those of us who want to play it can do, and those that don't needn't bother, it's neither compulsory nor banned.

Thanks Kate. Your reply makes sense even though I don't get it as you do.
As is said above, there's no hope for me but maybe you and Nick are starting to teach me another point of view!!
Nick - yes, if we all thought the same then life would be quite uninteresting. Maybe I've missed the subtle/clever responses, I have to admit that I rarely look in there. I did say in my first post that I was clearly the odd man out so, equally clearly, I was understanding that other opinions were valid.
As an aside I mentioned the thread to my grandson. The word I gave him was rap , one of Kate's. His contribution would have been storm.
Mick
PS Stormzy - a 'singer' (rapper). I had to ask him for an explanation!
