Even with the sail boat, in a calm it should be quicker from Harwich to Felixstowe than driving round by road. 35miles & the best part of an hour by the fastest road route, yet less than a mile across the harbour. www.google.com/maps/dir/51.9481305,1.3302808/51.945941,1.2868914/@51.930766,1.2901507,12.75z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e0?entry=ttu

Oh I like that - the most original railway engine picture I've seen in a long time. Thanks! The spot we chose for the return trip didn't work out so well, a modern everyday train stopped blocking our view totally...

I must walk up river and remind myself where they turn around but the travel journey can't be far for the round trip - however the pleasure boats have been going for years and years Tourist travel (for the sake of it) DSCF0425.jpg by Pete, on Flickr DSCF0414.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

I always thought this looked a nice way to travel but I suspect that, for me, the novelty would wear off after a couple of hours. 274A6879.jpg by Pete, on Flickr My family spent a week in one of those on the Great Ouze near Cambridge. It took us a week to travel about five miles but we loved it. The river wasn't especially busy and we swam every day, parked up (sorry moored) at the bottom of pub gardens reaching down to the water and visited small towns and villages along the way. I suppose now it might feel a bit less relaxed as I imagine the traffic on the water is heavier than it was back then.

I think like everything else the narrowboat holiday has become over popular in the last few years as has life on the canals. I'm always amazed at the number of boats I see when we cross canals when out cycling. Marinas are useful stopping places for meals. Somewhere in my yet-to-be-scanned negative files I have some records of a sailing weekend going Portsmouth to Poole (via Cowes) and back on a ~30' something or other. I was definitely a passenger invited into the company of sailors. It was an experience. It was also the start of a big race (around the world ?) in the Solent - some seriously big boats overtaking us! I can't say that I was that comfortable on the open water.

Easier than walking. I thought I had more pictures of this, and one showing a car in motion, but the memory fades (it was a journey break back in 2011) IMG_0018.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

We borrowed one on the Grand Union a few years ago for half a day, thoroughly enjoyed it. Some time, I would like to do the Leeds-Liverpool Canal completely, but that would then probably be enough forever.

Love this last one Nigel! Thank you. Pure luck. I was using an app called ReeXpose, it takes several shots over the time set, so there is a lot of trial and error when setting the shutter speed. This was a 1 sec exposure time consisting of shots at 1/30 sec then made into 1 image by the same app. It is saved as a DNG, is very over exposed but I haven’t got a DNG editor with me.

Egham?
I know they use 444s on the Plymouth/Portsmouth runs.
