Took this today using the 3 x zoom on my iPhone and quite impressed with it. Love the tiny quite insignificant machines at work in this small section of the quarry. Edit. if you are wondering about the title of the file, it was because I took the photo for a friend who is a retired quarry manager who we take the mick out of a bit! Quarry-porn by Nigel G, on Flickr "Insignificant machines"! My one and only trip to Australia, years ago, was to Karratha. I hired a 4x4 which turned out to be a Mitsubishi Shogun. As well as amber flashing lights on top it had a 2 m steel whip, with a flag at the end, standing up from the roof. This was to increase the chance of it being seen if hired to go down into the mines. Basically a Shogun is too small to be easily seen from the cab of any of the mining machinery. It needs the movement of a coloured flag waving about 4 m off the ground to catch the eye. I got pulled over for driving with the amber roof lights flashing. Took me ages to figure out a) the problem and b) how to turn them off. Amazing place. The supermarket car park was full of 4x4 with full roof racks loaded with spare wheels and jerry cans. Breakdown off a main road and you are quickly dead. I remember the hotel room had a warning saying that the cold water temperature from the tap in summer could be 46 C. The town supply was two large, unpainted, floating roof tanks on top of the nearest hill. The roads are so straight they have count-down to bend warnings. I tried driving to the next big town (150 miles) and gave up - mentally too tiring driving perfectly straight through unchanging scenery.

I meant insignificant in how they look in the quarry. I accept that they are far from insignificant, although these are on the smaller side of some machines.

Pindale quarry, in the Peak District. www.mindat.org/loc-242186.htmlThere is a cement factory next to it. I often pass that way if I do a bike ride out there.

This is it from different views (as seen on C4 sometimes when the big metal "4" walks along hills, if you are familiar with that channel) I was cycling along some of that path on Mam Tor yesterday too. Didn't see a big metal thing though. It is a lovely part of the world and luckily not that far from me. Hope Valley cement by Nigel G, on Flickr Pindale by Nigel G, on Flickr
