Spotted a weird spider in the garden while I were moving some paving stones . It was about half an inch long ( 12mm or so ) the legs were a rich red colour and the body was a purpleish grey colour , like a tick that had had a good meal . Never seen one like this , so took a shot with my phone . Any ideas on type ?

Woodlouse spider (Dysdera Crocata)? Since it is on your phone I suggest checking with Google Lens.

They can bite woodlice and are one of the few that could pierce our skin. I'd still view them as less dangerous than a wasp though as the real danger is a severe allergic reaction and that's rare with spider bites.

Woodlice do a good job recycling damp rotting woody rubbish in the garden. I never kill them but sometimes relocate them.

Woodlice keep burrowing into my late ripening apples. If there doing damage while on the tree , get a grease band lower down on the trunk , they can't pass that . It was big enough and sturdy enough not to want to go poking it and pissing it off !

Ordered, though I will also have to prune the branches touching the trellis.
