I ended up weighted the wrong way by the contents of my camera bag on my back as I was crouching down
That's really irritating, ain't it? (Or is just that I'm easily irritated?)

Yes. But it serves me right for carting too much stuff about with me.

Sorry to hear that, Kath. Or was it intentional? (In which case... I'm impressed! )

I think we've ALL been guilty of that, at some time or another!

This is how to carry all your "stuff", and have somewhere to sit.

Sorry to hear that, Kath. Or was it intentional? (In which case... I'm impressed! )It was intentional. I have IBS and it seemed that alcohol was not helping. At. All. So I thought I'd have a break for a week or two. See if things improved. The week or two somehow extended to a month and I just thought I'd carry on for a bit. See how things go. I can't say I miss it much. There's the odd time when I think 'Oh, I'd quite like a glass of wine' or 'I fancy a whisky' but it's usually only for a minute or so. I had a 'mocktail' on my birthday when the girls took me out for lunch and it was just as enjoyable as the 'real' thing would have been. I don't know that I noticed much benefit to not drinking straight away but now, I do think the IBS has settled down a lot and I definitely have more energy. So it's good.

It sounds as though you've made the right choice, Kath. Probably save a few quid, too.

It never fails to amaze me that you manage to get photographs of them. I've no patience I suppose. How long does it take? How many fly off before you've focused? Are you drugging them?!

It never fails to amaze me that you manage to get photographs of them. I've no patience I suppose. How long does it take? How many fly off before you've focused? Me too! Ages and lots! I'd more or less given up trying, even though it was 2018 that I was inspired by Martin's pictures to give it a go. Last Saturday I determined to have a serious try and found that, although they are easily disturbed and fly off, if I followed one until it landed to feed then there is a period where I had an opportunity. I'd say success was 80% patience and 20% luck on the day but I think to do it properly requires a lot of knowledge about the favoured environment and where to find it, especially to get the interesting environmental shots of feeding etc. rather than the "easier" ones where the butterfly is resting/warming up with wings spread in a warm spot. I think a longer lens works better because you can be a bit further away. I've been using a 100-400 lens on my Fuji (APS-C sensor) which has a closest focussing distance of about 5'. I might go out again to try again today, birding primarily, there are butterflies around but it is wetlands so access is poor. It is on the windy side too which may keep numbers down. I noticed on Saturday that the weather is important and even a cloud passing can suddenly make all the butterflies disappear.
