Additional fact: The Gatekeeper is often called the Hedge Brown. Thank you - I had looked up Gatekeeper the other day after you said there were a lot about and noted that the Female was paler. So I jumped to conclusions. Male Gatekeeper I presume ? I'll edit my previous post and correct it. DSCF4907.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

Male and female Gatekeeper are identical under wing. The male will have a broader dark band around the edge of it's upper wings.

Two white tips on a thistle. DSCF4875.jpg by Pete, on Flickr I saw a different type of bumble bee with alternating white and black strips but it buzzed off while I was focussing.

It's been a bumper year for Gatekeepers. Not up here unfortunately. Multiple sources say it is absent from Scotland as they are Southern softies .

I posted this in the daily challenge today. I was lucky to see it touch down, only very briefly, but unfortunately there was an intervening thistle and the leaves were in the way but not clearly visible because they were so far out of focus - hence the blurring across the head, body and half the wings. I thought it suited the "veiled" theme. DSCF4897.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

Not seeing them on the lists for round here. In Midlothian I think the only skippers are large and small although others are around further afield.

The ginger wigged small skipper I think there's been a successful reintroduction of the chequered skipper in Western Scotland. We have them at one site in England (Rockingham Forest). You also have the Dingy Skipper around the Moray Firth. The large and small skippers range up as far as lowland Scotland, but the Grizzled, Essex, and Lulworth Skipper are restricted to Southern England. The Lulworth skipper has the smallest range being found pretty much on the coastal Isle of Purbeck.

Butterfly Conservation butterfly-conservation.org › ...PDF Butterflies of Scotland butterfly-conservation.org/sites/default/files/2020-03/Butterflies%20of%20Scotland%20poster%20for%20print.pdfSays there are some Essex ones over at Lockerbie which is about an hours drive south and not too far out of the way from some bike trails in Dumfries.

Glad you like it, especially as I ended up weighted the wrong way by the contents of my camera bag on my back as I was crouching down for this, ending up staring up at concerned strangers who thought I was drunk.

Indeed a great composition. I am in total awe, especially as "crouching down" must be the understatement of the year
