I did try a new spot in the woods the other day but came away empty carded. This one is from years ago down Roslin Glen (near the famous chapel). Not sure if they've got to the bottom of Highland Darter up here and Common Darter down south but IIRC there is supposed to be something different about stripes on the legs or something. Mick would likely know better than me.

Tough day in the field (and woods) today. Dull overcast, quite breezy, and about 10 degrees cooler than recent days meant no much in the way of butterflies were active. Managed to get a few though. small skipper by Martin Bone, on Flickr small heath by Martin Bone, on Flickr silver washed fritillary by Martin Bone, on Flickr meadow brown by Martin Bone, on Flickr meadow brown 2 by Martin Bone, on Flickr marbled white by Martin Bone, on Flickr dark green fritillary by Martin Bone, on Flickr dark green fritillary 2 by Martin Bone, on Flickr

I'm no expert, To reliably say this is a comma I'd have to add: ',' Your image certainly looks similar to the images of comma butterflies google produces. However most of them seem to have more irregular edges to the wings. Did you get to see the underside of the wings? Apparently it's the white curved mark there that gives rise to their name (and helps distinguish them from a similar looking species)

No, I think it was shy.
Thank you though chaps. I though it may have been, but it looked slightly different from the pics in the Boys' Bumper Book of Bugs.

There are apparently 9 sub species of comma.

Small skipper? Phone in macro mode so had to get within 3-5cm to focus. Get more working distance with my MP-E!
