Drab looking dragon perched in front of me but too far off to see properly. Wrong lens too as I was revisiting the wider scene DSCF3399.jpg by Pete, on Flickr This is as far as I could go with it in LR - still not very clear. Effective focal length 120 mm (max end of a 16-80 mm ). The stick looks not too bad. DSCF3400-Enhanced.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

I had more suitable equipment with me this this time but I gave up on the in-flight shots. Unfortunately it preferred a really messy background to perch on. Middle day (full sun) is probably not the best time to catch them. This is, I believe, a Black Tailed Skimmer. It was constantly on the move chasing other dragons. DSCF4279.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

Still not seen a dragonfly this year, although I've not been to places I'd expect to see them at. Occasionally see some zipping around woodland streams but ponds up on the moor would be a better bet for pics. Couldn't resist this little brown moth posing on my back door a few evenings ago. Not sure it's a species that is supposed to be here though. Bugger to get light onto the eyes either way. Not bad focus for being three pints in and guessing where the eye would be in focus .

Went back to Ness Gardens with a longer lens (160-600). Same perch stick as the earlier shot with the 16-80 mm but whether or not it is the same dragon I don't know. DSCF4363.jpg by Pete, on Flickr Four spotted chaser maybe ?

Pointing the other way and further distant - not sure if it is the same dragon but it looks like a four spotted chaser DSCF4371.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

The AF struggled to find this - is not a good shot (blurred at 100%) - but I thought I did quite well. If you take the crop into account that is an effective focal length of about 2,000 mm (more than 50% cropped off, lens at 600 mm on APS-C) DSCF4344.jpg by Pete, on Flickr Slightly easier one - sitting pretty but could have picked a nicer leaf DSCF4332.jpg by Pete, on Flickr Bit different maybe - with the sidelight and shadow. Might be the four spotted chaser again. I'm going to have to find out how to do a focus preset with the 150-600. It will wind out to max distance trying to lock on but doesn't come back again. I suppose that is "good" to avoid focus hunting forever but it is really annoying with a close (ish) subject. Again much more than 50% crop with lens at 600 mm so effective focal length > 2,000 mm. Lucky to spot this, this morning. It was just warming and waking up. Was confused seeing all the legs then realised there's two of 'em.....at it The recipient of the amorous encounter appears to be tucking into an aphid. Multi tasking to the extreme

Lots of various dragonflies at my local nature reserve, but nothing you haven't seen already, so I won't bore you with them. They're on my Flickr page if your interested. I'm guessing the storm and torrential rain we had on Monday into Tuesday triggered a big hatch though as there were loads of 'zombie' dragonflies attached to the reeds. zombie by Martin Bone, on Flickr

Not often I get a pic in here, but this beastie landed at my feet on a walk last night - to my astonishment it stayed there long enough to let me pick it up before it flew off! Grab shot with phone - and the weird angle is because it was upside down! Attachments:
