In my time working (voluntarily) in education I had the fortune/misfortune to spend a lot of time with many MP's .
I have to say that, away from the political stage and in private, almost all of them seemed to be very charming people. In particular I spent three hours or more sitting next to Ken Livingstone. At the time his politics and mine were pretty different and I expected a difficult time having to be polite to him (I was the host). However I was wrong. He was the most charming and interesting dinner companion, and I came away having enjoyed myself a lot. The only times that I had to bite my tongue was when Joan Ruddock (then MP for Lewisham/Deptford) chipped in and they got onto politics.
My favourite was Estelle Morris maybe because I had met her Uncle, Alf Morris, and knew both her birth place and school and also her constituency. She was a delight and I was sad when she resigned (as secretary of state for education) because she said that she wasn't up to the job!!
Having said that they all become different people when on public view.
