I like the building and the tones on it, but I don't think it needs all that sky to the right. A square crop might look better.

...whereas I like that cloud pattern on the right, in contrast to the building.
Just as well I'm not a photo competition judge, I suppose

Well, I obviously picked the 1/4 shot as my favourite that I popped onto Flickr, so for me the negative space is a key part of the image, but of course, everyone's perception, expectation and enjoyment differs

I see the cloud as an integral and essential part of the whole. It gives the eye something to measure the imposing nature of the building against. Take the cloud away, and imagine a bland blue sky, and all you have is just a tall building. The balance between the cloudy sky and the building is very well judged in my opinion, and almost creates an impression of vertigo.

I agree with squeamishossifrage's post re the feeling of vertigo. I think the sky helps to emphasize the height and solidness of the building's shape against the cloudy sky.

For me, the negative space is needed as squeamish says.

Thanks all. It was awkward to shoot the building since there was still construction going on in front of it. Unusually for me, I 'worked the scene' for quite a while rather than just taking a pic and walking away, I was pleased with this one.

There are some great shapes on that new campus. I'll post a few in Exhibitions.

I like the building and the tones on it, but I don't think it needs all that sky to the right. A square crop might look better. Pretty much what I was thinking as well though I could be happy with retaining some of the cloud detail on the right - maybe a 4:3 or 5:4 might work better.

I like this, and I like the extra sky as it is interesting. Not sure what photo judges would make of it, but we had one recently who would insist that you photoshop a plane into that space.

I like the perspective. I like the negative space. But I'm not sure about the bright cloud top right - leads my eye out of the image. Perhaps tone it down a little?
