My 13 year old grandson took this yesterday. He was using my gear.
What do you think?

The boy done good.
I bet he was excited when reviewing his shots, something for you to nurture and encourage between the generations.
How long before he is begging for grandad's cast off camera gear I wonder?

I like it. The boy done well. An a alternative title would be "gull drops LSD" (lesser-spotted dogfish).

Thanks folks. He was very excited when he saw the incident, more excited when he saw on the camera that he had caught it and more excited still when I got it on screen! He and I share a love of NH and he's getting well into photography. We share my gear and that means that he usually ends with the most appropriate lens and I have whatever else is in the bag!! He says that he can't wait for the Odonata season (my first love) and neither can I. It's pretty special to have him as a companion. In this situation he was using my Nikon with the Nikon 200-500mm lens at 500mm (hand held). Yes he did do well. To the picture. I agree that it's a black backed gull (first year plumage) and agree that it's a dogfish. I think that the bird found the fish washed up and didn't actually catch it. I was surprised that it seemed to tear away at the fish for a while, then it flew up and dropped it, then eventually swallowed it whole (see below). I was also surprised that no other gulls came and attempted to steal. Mick

He did a great job and I hope he continues to get that excitement from photography for a long time to come.
