Years back I inherited two chimney pots from my dad. He had a whole line of them at the side of their house and he always had a beautiful display of what I seem to recall were tobacco flowers (?) in them. Anyway, now that we have access to the 'patio' in the communal garden I've determined to titivate it all up a bit and make it a pleasant place to be so we went to a garden centre today and I bought two frost-proof pots to fill with *something* when I've decided what I want. The chimney pots are not the same size so I purchased a 10" and an 11" pot, put one inside the other in the boot of the car and drove home. Only now they are well and truly stuck one inside the other! I've pulled, pushed, gently tapped and tried twisting but they're not budging. Mr Kath has suggested putting them in a tub full of water but I'm not convinced. Any ideas? I would prefer not 'smash the bigger one until the smaller one is revealed' if at all possible!

Dunno. Best not to nest pots. Leave inverted for a week and see if gravity shifts it. A 10" pot is quite heavy. Tap lightly occasionally.

Perhaps try squirting some WD40 at the edge of the smaller one? I do know the problem though! I had two pyrex bowls which decided to do the same thing. Pots have done it to me as well. Good luck.

Second thought. Risks damage. Because it is small pot inside large. Put a thick piece of card board on the lawn. Stand the large pot up side down on it. Lift the pot half an inch off the cardboard then drop it. The outside pot should stop and the inside pot might come loose. The inner pot has likely settled at a slight angle inside the big pot and vibrated tight.
Third thought. Leave the pots upside down inside the car boot (supported from sliding about). Maybe vibration from the car + gravity will reverse what vibration from the car + gravity did in the first place.

Have you considered a time machine to avoid the initial mistake? You're welcome.

I''ve got a puffer graphite which is ace to free locks which have jammed. I wonder if that could be puffed around the rim where it is jammed?

What about heating up the outer pot with a hair dryer or similar to see if it will expand sufficiently? And something cold like ice in a bag to shrink the inner pot?

I e done some Googling and tomorrow I’m going to put them I’m in a bucket, fill up the outside with hot water and the inside with cold. If that doesn’t do the trick I like the sound of upside down in the car.

Well nothing I tried worked. However, Mr Kath was out and about today so I asked him to take them back to the garden centre to see if they could do it. They could. In about thirty seconds by all accounts. I reckon I helped though!
