Have seen rumour that tomorrow Pentax will release a monochrome-sensor K3. I'm not in the market for a DSLR but if it's true it's good to see some innovation (in a market sense, more than a technology sense).
In other news, there's a poll open via Pentax Japan social media looking for thoughts on their new proposed film compact. It's all in Japanese but already interesting to see what they are asking for input on. Style, type, etc. are fairly obvious questions but also how attracted are you to manual winding, auto winding etc. One strap lug or two, that kind of thing.

Technically, at time of writing, it was.

It could be interesting but not having any suitable lenses, and the price, puts me off somewhat. A monochrome camera would be another challenge, though and I rather like monochrome hmmm.

Somehow I feel this won't be much of a seller, no change there for Pentax in more recent times. I just don't see where this range is actually heading, every other manufacturer is producing mirrorless cameras and the DSLR, like it or not is all but dead as a new product. I do have a Pentax 645 film camera, that may well be sold before long, it's heavy, I have some health issues and all the film stock I actually like has been discontinued in 120 now, so its raison d'être has gone for me.

If I were a Pentax shooter, I might be tempted , though I'd probably see if the price came down in a year or so . Or wait to buy used . I use mostly Sony A or E mount cameras with a few Sony lenses but mostly Minolta A mount lenses. I just have a small selection of Pentax gear at the moment after giving a niece my K10d and some lenses several years ago . For my black and white shooting with Pentax gear , I've got my ME Super loaded with some FP4 and the 45mm pancake lens attached . That'll have to do me . It is a camera I'll keep an eye on , as the lenses I have would be fine on it , the 18-135mm or film era prime lenses I have .

I must admit it sounded like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic to me. Good luck to them, but I can't see it making them relevant again.

It's everything that's good and bad about Pentax in one release, isn't it? Great for purists BUT wrong model (needs FF) and several years too late.

I can see the attraction of monochrome cameras but also see the downside. You have to get filtration right in camera.

I have two of the programmable settings on my Powershot g12 set to monochrome - standard and sepia. I never use them...

Pentax have always been one of my favourite camera makers, but they don't half self-harm at times in market terms. Somehow a name that was synonymous with SLR cameras in the ‘60s and ‘70s has managed to slide quietly into obscurity, or almost so. One could be forgiven for thinking that they had ceased trading. I completely agree with Zou, wrong model, too late. A great idea, that works for Leica, but it isn’t going to revive the SLR. A monochrome mirrorless, partnered with a colour version, might just have made Pentax a big name again. As an aside, Pentax as a maker of mirrorless cameras sounds wrong given that the name derives from the pentaprism which is absent in a mirrorless camera.
