Following the demise of my Canon 7dii, it's son & heir arrived a moment ago. I ended up going mirrorless and getting an R7 with adapter for my existing EF lenses. I'm mighty impressed by Jessop's service...ordered yesterday evening and it arrived lunchtime today, despite them quoting 5-7 days.

I'm finding the Fuji harder to adapt to from the 1Div than I was expecting, technique-wise, but I think that is mirrorless vs DSLR more than one make vs another. BTW, unfortunately I didn't make it to Lyme Regis so meet-up possibility = nil, but the kids/grandkids seem to be having fun.

As someone who has mostly moved from Canon DSLR to Canon mirrorless, I would suggest that your issues are likely to be almost entirely down to changing brands, rather than DSLR to mirrorless. The only thing that catches me out as a mirrorless issue is studio flash, and remembering to turn exposure simulation off. Everything else seems so natural. I've not tried the R7, but it is the logical replacement for the 7D II. The sensor is excellent, I do know that (from my M6 II), with decent R AF it should be a big step up from the dear old 7D II, a very nice camera.

The only thing that catches me out as a mirrorless issue is studio flash, and remembering to turn exposure simulation off. Everything else seems so natural. Could be Nick, although the handling is not dissimilar to Canon, to my mind anyway. It is switching from using a single focussing point with Canon to using object detection with Fuji that I am struggling with. The object detection is "very good" but [for small birds] the detected points tend to jump around a lot and it makes me move the camera to catch up with the "green square" in the viewfinder as if I was tracking subject focus with a single point. At the beginning I tended to find the camera had locked onto the last automatically detected position and my "target" had moved. It probably works a treat in pray-and-spray mode but I prefer taking single exposures. I wondered how the Canon object detection worked [for birds]. I bought the Fuji while I was waiting to see what R camera might appear as a 1DX replacement. I use a 1Div and hadn't considered a Canon APS-C replacement yet because the IDiv is "only" ten years old and hasn't paid for itself yet and the R5 is "first generation". The Fuji body was half the price of an R5, I had some lenses, I fell into temptation. The limited use I have made of face detection suggests this is more predictable. By and large the face wanted in focus is the one you are aiming at and folk don't jump around the same as small birds. Not tried any other modes.

After a quick fiddle (oooer missus!) I'm impressed. I did have a play with one a while back, so I sort of knew what I was expecting. Despite it's relatively small size it sits nicely in my gert puddies and the layout is slightly different to the 7dii, but the important controls are in familiar places. The menus are the same layout as other Canon bodies, so transition should be straight forward. There's a couple of things that drew me to R7. First, and most importantly, was the AF. It will be interesting to see how the eye tracking works, but I've seen good reviews. The fact that it takes the EPL6 batteries like my 7dii & 5dii use went in it's favour too.

Another big plus is the in-body IS which works alongside the lens IS, so will give me a couple of extra stops of stabilisation. That will be handy for my hand held butterfly shots. The only thing I think I'll miss from the 7dii is the top of body display.

Perhaps I will take my 7Dii out this weekend and see if it survives an accidental drop. I am tempted by the R7 mainly due to its AF abilities but like Pete I am still not a convert to mirrorless. The other factor is likely hunting problems with my Sigma 150-600. Please keep us informed on progress. Surprised you managed to get one so quickly, perhaps supply has caught up with demand.

I've heard of people having issues with AF using Tamron lenses. The only non-Canon lens I have is a Sigma 105mm macro and that functions perfectly. Lots of places were out of stock, but there are a few places that have them bundled with an 18-150mm STM lens.

I use a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens on my 60D - I've had no AF problems.

I'm fairly well converted - it is only that I didn't want to jump in with an R5 soon after it was launched because I expected a shakedown and then a second generation to come quickly and it hasn't worked out like that. Meantimes I did already have a [very] lightweight Fuji kit to which I added at reasonable cost a "preowned" X-H1 and a "100-400" which I got used to and found very "Canon-like". I then had a weak moment* and bought an X-H2S (contrary behaviour to buy a freshly released and "first time" model). This is very competent equipment-wise even though I'm not as familiar with it as I am my Canon gear and it needs a different technique. I just treated myself to an ex-demo Fuji 150-600 which is very light and works very well. I'm not dumping any Canon gear yet and I'll probably end up keeping the EF lenses and buying an R body with adaptor. There is also a Chinese made adaptor that allows fully auto EF on XF but it isn't stocked by anyone I would buy from. The R prices do seem to be coming down. Meantimes I seem now to have 5 cameras and two nearly overlapping systems. Too much choice! *I stupidly walked into the shop to inquire when the UK stock would be available and found they already had pre-launch stock under the counter. Kinda asked for that one.

I've been blown away by just how good the R7 is. I've just ordered one for my wife as the prices are starting to sneak up. Just need to wait for stock to arrive in the UK now.

I thought your first results looked good. My reluctance to go to the R system was 1) it is new 2) I saw very little feedback on user experience 3) it was expensive, especially when the first generation R5 seemed to be the only option.
