My father is downsizing and I've gathered up a load of photos (and more to come) to organise and put into photo books etc.. This include some treasured memories like his wedding and my all-in-one printer/scanner/copier isn't going to cut the mustard. Any recommendations for a dedicated scanner specifically to scan prints?

For prints an all in one should be fine, it's what you do with the scans thereafter that will need more attention I think.

I bought a high-end (V850 Pro) Epson flatbed for scanning negatives. I haven't tried it in "normal" print copy mode yet so I haven't tested it against my all-in-one (HP Office Jet Pro 9025). I've only used this latter for document scanning and copying (it is duplex scan/copy - awesome!) and printing but I'd expect it to cope well with prints when driven from VueScan.

I have used a 16 year old basic A4 flat scanner that runs with Vuescan software, which produces decent JPG files that I can adjust in my ancient copy of Photoshop Elements (including cloning out scratches). You may find that older photographs need a little work - I have managed to rescue small 60 year old colour ones that have faded and gained a colour cast (probably contact prints from lost 7 x 7 negatives), and then get decent (but grainy) 20 x 30 cm colour prints from the CEWE online service. The larger the print the better the image file you will get, but I was pleasantly surprised what I managed to get from the faded 7 x 7 cm print.

I would say try what you have first to find out whether it is satisfactory.

I would say try what you have first to find out whether it is satisfactory. I apply this policy to almost every purchase, unless the potential purchase is something of which I do not already own an older working example, or has some feature that my current version cannot do and that new feature is going to change my life. I must have saved a fortune...

Just a software order was needed. Downloaded Vuescan and my existing scanner now produces usable results. Me and my middle brother circa 1978. I'm the blonde. gandm by Martin Bone, on Flickr Mudge & Pudge's wedding in 1962 scannned from a 5x3 print. mumanddadwedding by Martin Bone, on Flickr

Just a software order was needed. Downloaded Vuescan and my existing scanner now produces usable results. I also use Vuescan to drive an ancient (c. 2001) Minolta 'Dimage Scan Dual III' 35 mm negative and slide scanner. This was my original reason for buying Vuescan in 2013 (a 'one off' purchase in those days, which still delivers updates) when the Minolta software would not work with Windows 7. Then I discovered that the driver for my A4 flatbed scanner (c. 2005) also would not work with Windows 7, and Vuescan also works perfectly with that. If you have, or may borrow, and old scanners you will probably find that Vuescan will keep them active until they fall apart.

If you have a lot of photos one way can be to hire something like the Epson FastFoto FF-640 High-Speed Photo Scanning System with Auto Photo Feeder which copies at 1 photo a second and can be rented. Last time I saw then for rent was on e bay for about £60 for a week.
