Five or six years ago, among an auction lot of photographic gear I bought, there were two unused 500ml bottles of Agfa Rodinal. I opened one of them today, and developed two films. The developer worked perfectly. Not bad when you think that it was made before 2006. In the same lot was an unopened bottle of Paterson Acufix, which expired in 2005. I wonder whether that would still work?
I use 13ml of Rodinal to develop two films - this bottle will last a while...
When I mixed the developer, I found that the cold water straight from the tap was at 19 degrees.

I suppose a sealed glass bottle would be fine, it's air that does the damage, the colour of the contents would provide a clue as to whether there was significant deterioration. I don't know there's much to go off in fixer, you would spot the break up anyway.

Rodinal has been shipped in plastic bottles for as long as I can remember (30+ yrs. ) it can be used after 10+ yrs in a open part used bottle even after it has taken on the look of an aged red wine.
Rodinal as a stand dev. or with minimal agitation is at 1:50 is a marvellous developer, just don't use it in a Jobo rotary processor and scan the negatives in auto or basic settings or you will be in the er. Rodinal it is so grainy camp.
I opened a bottle of Acufix earlier in the week that had a lot of precipitated out crystals which I suspect would have gone back into solution at a higher temperature and would of been perfectly usable. Throwing it away and using some fresh Ilford Rapid fixer was easier and quicker so that is what I did.

During lockdown, I found an unopened bottle of the stuff I had mislaid well over 10 years before (probably 15), in a desk drawer behind lots of old filing. And yes, it still worked as good as new. Really incredible stuff.

Unless the fixer smells of ammonia it will be fine.

The bottle of Rodinal that I finished in December last, I bought in 2005. At the last, the bottle was crusty, the developer very dark, but it worked. Attachment Deleted
