Theses make rather an interesting change from the usual diving and swallowing a fish shots...

How does our dull island deserve such beautiful birds?
New Years Eve 2020 I popped into the hide at a local lake on the way back from the allotment, and had a ten-minute display from one not 20 feet away, the first time I ever saw one hovering. The rest of the winter seemed so much more bearable after that brief burst of untrammelled joy.

Beautiful photos, but... Very upset. I've been trying to photograph Kingfishers for most of my adult life and never had the chance. Either I don't see any when I've got a camera with me, or I see them when I don't have a camera! Would you PM me whereabouts on the Stour you saw these? Would love to get the chance to photograph them

Would love to get the chance to photograph them You just have to be lucky. I remember (just) the wonderful kingfisher photos by Scott, who joined the old AP forum as a beginner and quickly became “guru”. He had found a good location where they could be seen both resting and feeding with some frequency. I think they are quite territorial so “find the spot” and revisit gives plenty of chances. I’ve only seen them at a distance perched. In flight they are just a blur although I did see a birdwatching “picture of the week” where someone had got one head-on in flight. Just amazing considering how small they are (especially in profile) and how fast they move.

They are fantastic birds and despite their gorgeous colour, right bugger's to spot when perched.

Lovely set of shots. I've still to get one decent shot of a kingfisher, I've just one where it was largely obscured by branches . I've been lucky enough to see some close up , but never whilst I've had a camera on me or just a wideangle lens attached.

I popped over to this location last week, saw the kingfishers as well as otters!
My biggest lens is only 210mm so didn't really have any hope of getting any decent photographs, but to sit in the sunshine on the riverside and watch the kingfishers was delightful
