Smashing, they are wonderful birds. I was so lucky to see one of the reputed three pairs that turned up at our local RSPB but I think they aren’t there anymore. They don’t “travel” as much as some birds so populations stay local.

They're very localised, found mainly on the reed beds along the Wessex coast, Bristol Channel, Essex and the Fens, the Wash, Morecombe Bay, and a couple of estuaries on the east coast of Scotland. The RSPB estimates there are just 695 pairs in the UK.
