I think there is probably something fundamental to being human that drives us to create and embrace the idea of edges, borders and boundaries. Survival instinct from knowing that 'this' place is safe but 'that' place isn't perhaps? 'This' is mine and 'that' is yours. Or theirs. We like a windbreak or a garden fence. When I was a child there was an imaginary line delineating the back seat of the car to stop squabbles between me and my brother. It didn't work. I imagined the line slightly to be more in my favour than he did. The reverse applied and so fisticuffs on long journeys were inevitable. Perhaps if hte boundary had been more clearly defined?
Edges, borders and boundaries can be geographical, physical, social. Every time we look through our viewfinders we on some level have to make a decision about what's in the frame and what's out of it. Even time gets separated into sections - who's a babyboomer? Who's Gen X? When do you move from to the other? What's it like to be on the edge - of a cliff, of a property dispute, of a great discovery... think knife edge, edge of reason, fences, hedges, walls, shorelines. But also how we see across boundaries - windows, gates, gaps. Think inclusion, or separation or even transition.
I'm open for any and all interpretations here!

John-Muir-Way by Kathryn Polley, on Flickr To start us off, here's one I took when I just 'nipped out for a quick walk' and ended up doing the first leg of the John Muir Way. The difference between the two sides of the fence is that the land on the left is Forestry Commission and the right is, well, not. (I'm assuming here, but it is most likely owned by Luss Estates as they seem to own everything here.)
