Got a 49" Sony 4K. Sound is very good. For specials e.g. if I ever get far enough through the son's of anarchy for the music to seriously up its game then I feed the sound through the upmarket esoteric sound system. Mostly I do not bother even if listening to regular music tv (e.g. 70s greatest music stuff) wher you know the sound is going to be shite anyway.

The sound on my LG 65“ TV is so good I didn't bother plugging my soundbar in.

I have a little Jawbone Jambox "bluetooth" speaker (also takes a stero mini jack feed) for holidays. Sound quality is unbelievable for something that size and frankly better than the gear I had for half my life.

What is television? We very rarely watch anything and HD is wasted on us simply because we wouldn’t watch it.

Chester - the sound quality is why I'm hanging on to my oldish TV set. Having tried a new TV a while back, I gave it away in disgust. The HD box didn't arrive on the Island today. Blamed on strikes not the ferry. Should be with me Monday. The guy came round to tell me. The sound on flat-screen TVs is dire because there's nowhere to put any decent loudspeakers, and most buyers don't ask about the sound when buying the set. My TV is old enough that when originally on sale its loudspeakers were an optional extra that were designed to clip to the sides of the display. I first experimented with sending TV sound to a cheap stereo system as long ago as 1980, linking a mono earphone socket on a TV to stereo amplifier and speakers. I've used something like this ever since, and the 5 channel sound on some Freeview HD stuff was the most recent 'upgrade' when I got a box with HD tuners. One later HD series of 'Shaun the Sheep' I can clearly see the Allen key sockets in the pupils of his eyes that allow them to me moved as required... and the makers had great fun with the sound too. I just use the subtitles - sound off or on makes no difference

A friend of mine has new 65" (or thereabouts) Sony TV with Dolby Atmos. When I heard it, I assumed it was using a sounder or a home theatre. It was just using its own built in speakers. impressive sound Impressive compared to other flat-screen TVs, or impressive compared to a surround system? I ask because any flat-screen TV that only uses its own built-in speakers is dependant upon bouncing sound off walls to get the effect, so is also dependant upon the placement in the room and the room's dimensions. The setup of surround system to be used for TV/film soundtracks requires patience and an ability to ignore the temptation to go overboard with volume settings. Much like the careful setting up of a PC monitor for viewing pictures, where many people have the various brightness, contrast and colour intensity settings to high.

Well I tried to shop local, but I now wish I had just gone to Argos and be done with it. Firstly, it was a delayed delivery because of strikes on the mainland. Then when it should have been yesterday, that was delayed because they were at the North of the Island but it was too windy. Never mind, the box has come so it will be today. He arrived with the latest all singing all dancing 4k do this do that box but of course for way more than the one I wanted. So I wait again for that to be delivered in a couple of days. All I want is to access the channels I can't at present! Not much is it?
