It is an art, I remember seeing it done in the 70's when I was growing up in East Yorkshire. I gather there are vastly differing technique and styles depending on where in the country you are, the ones I remember were more woven if that is the right way of describing it.

Yes it is an art as well as a craft. We do the Midland Bullock style of laying as far as possible. Unfortunately the mix of species in the hedges is often not conducive to a good result. We have too much field maple and not enough thorn. The maple has been allowed to grow into trees which are too large to lay and have to be coppiced; this leaves gaps and weak growth of desirable species. Here is one we did earlier. A colleague is trimming the last stake.
