I think the reds are also on the Isle of Wight. There are quite a few populations. Nearest to us is Formby and, just looking, we were last there in 2018. I remember it being a bit mad busy, I don't think it was holidays (April 21st). Viewing is a bit orchestrated because it is very popular with visitors. I should go back now that I have a longer lens. This is a crop from full-frame using a 400 mm lens. 274A5514.jpg by Pete, on Flickr When they are on the ground you can see all them, once they get into the trees it is just a glimpse. 274A5531.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

Earlier this morning, waiting for the garden centre to open, I popped in to Wollaton Park, home of The Dark Knight. Spotted these

Parallel thoughts. For "Autumn" I thought we's go to Attingham Park which has a deer park as well as woodland walks etc. etc. The deer park was closed for something or other in the morning and by the time it was opened I was really too tired to bother but there was a herd of does not too far in, although concealed in a hollow. DSCF5881.jpg by Pete, on Flickr At the computer just now I found that the camera settings were not quite right. I'd turned the mode dial to C3 instead of C2 which I had set up yesterday. I wondered why a couple of things were not as expected but put it down to poor memory. I must have set C3 to something similar back in March when I first played with saved custom settings. Regrettably everything for today was saved as a jpg not a raw file. Only realised when I tried to change the white balance in LR and didn't get the expected menu. Grrrr.

I started on ISO400 but upped it to 1250. Not used to early (relatively speaking) morning shoots. Big signs up stating 50 metres as a safe distance, but early am could probably make it 20 but I'm not prepared to find out. There's a golf course where the deer hang out...I wonder if they had the Red Deer Cup last weekend...

Big signs up stating 50 metres as a safe distance, but early am could probably make it 20 but I'm not prepared to find out. There's a golf course where the deer hang out...I wonder if they had the Red Deer Cup last weekend... These were well within the "deer sanctuary, do not enter" markers. The camera doesn't give focussing distance but the picture is cropped a bit, as well as the aspect ratio changed, and I was using the 600 mm end of a 150-600 on APSC - so, field of view wise, that is 900 mm equivalent for 35 mm. They were probably more than 100 yds away and (until they stood up) well hidden in a shallow gully. Edit: We were last there in October 2018 and the rut had just started so Although we were there in October 2018 we didn't see any deer. We were last there in January 2020 and saw the deer but no rut. I guess, from the large group of does (maybe 30) and the absence of stags, today was too early [for the rut]. We walked about 3 miles in the woods before the gate to the deer park was opened and I didn't have the energy to go exploring. Will go back in 2 or 3 weeks. It is about 80 minutes to drive there.

A trip down to the deer parks at Ashton Court, Bristol today. Literally a stones throw from Ashton Gate stadium and old industrial buildings of the city itself. The Fallow deer rut seems to be over already as all was calm. The red deer were still a bit active with the dominant stag spending a lot of time mustering his harem and keeping the one challenger at arms length. Bit of a waste of a day, except that it was indeed a nice weather day and a good walk. Went again to see the deer at Attingham Park. Only does in groups and not a stag in sight. Someone said that there had been tuberculosis in the herd so wondered if they had segregated the males and females or carried out a large cull leaving just a few does. Anyway they were keeping well away from the many people out in the sunshine. It was very, very busy. Distant fallow. DSCF5998.jpg by Pete, on Flickr
