Went out for a quick walk with Buddy @ lunchtime - a brief break in the showers. Took my Zfc and 7Artisans 50mm f/0.95 lense - I have to figure out what it can do. I bought it as mainly a portrait lense, to play with the extremes of shallow DoF. But I am beginning to see it as a more versatile lense. Be gentle with me - I am still getting used to my first mirrorless camera with a totally manual lense. Enough of the excuses - what think ye?

Great, I would have wanted to have the entire shadow of the bench in shot, to the expense of the area to the right of the boat but then the most interesting cloud would be partially lost, difficult is it not. With the current composition, can you get a bit more detail into it either through levels there looks to be a lot of un used tones both in high light and shadow and / or move clarity over to the right to get a bit more definition in the mid tones. Yes I know it is a wide aperture lens pointed into the light but you should be able to make it sparkle a bit more.

I think it does look better on 500px than here, blame the compression. But I agree with Keith on the composition. I'd consider getting lower so the bench breaks the horizon. Maybe darken the foreground grass so you have 3 blocks of differing tone, creating a differentiation with the sea.

Yes, I'd have moved right a bit, got the whole shadow in and also lost the little jaggy bit of cloud peeking in top right. I like where the bench is in regards to height though. Maybe try tweaking levels for a bit more contrast and to make use of some of the highlights?

It reminded me of the old AP cult of the bench from way back, when everybody went mad photographing benches. I still shudder to think about it! Anybody else remember it?

I think you were right to lose the shadow so as to get the bench where you've put it, balanced by the cloud on the diagonal. I also think the range of tones works.
Perhaps I'm too into Lomography-type thinking at the moment, but I do like it. Would have preferred the ship an inch to the right, ideally, though.

I kept my Bench-inspired user name there ever since. Still enjoy looking for benches to be part of compositions from time to time.

I must admit that I do tend to notice benches in a landscape much more readily than I used to!

Yes and only yesterday I thought of it when I saw a bench but as there were loads of folks around it, I didn't bother taking a photo.

Adrian's picture works for me but I would have shifted the ship more to the right to better balance the bench. I'd also boost the contrast - particularly the sky as the cloud needs more definition.

Hi Guys, As ever, I waited a while to get a few peoples feedback on the image, before responding. I had considered including the full shadow of the bench, but unfortunately, with the low winter sun it would have resulted in too wide a composition for my taste. The boat was where it was in the image, close enough to a 1/3 for my liking. I could have "moved" it easily, but my preference is not to. As for the contrast and "sparkle", I considered it. I even re-edited the image from scratch, taking the feedback into account. And when I compared the finished result to what I posted, there was no discernible difference (I like what I like ). As for changing the perspective to a lower viewpoint, personally I do not feel the image would work if the bench breached the horizon. For me, it shows the potential for an unknown person to survey the possible views. And that is how I wanted it. Thank you so much for your feedback - it helps me challenge what I produce. It may not be to everybody's liking, but it helps me make the most of my photography. And challenges me to improve. Kind regards Adrian
