Some results of my 'Serviced' 1969 ROLLEIFLEX 3.5 F Planar on 1993 dated ORWO NP22 film which I processed in my 'Home-Made' FX-4 Formula 1+1 . It is near West Horndon in Essex ( England) 1/60th @ f18 to get Depth of Field. -- Barnard's Farm. I did a 16x12" Darkroom Print on Ilford MG IV Glossy but i think a Competition Judge would say " It needs Human Interest" Barnard's Farm trip with Rolleis by Peter Elgar, on Flickr

Such a judge would be wrong.

Such a judge would be wrong. Agreed! I don't do much in the way of 'human interest' anyway so I am probably biased, but I think it is complete the way it is. It also looks like a good candidate for the January Monthly Scheme "Curves".

Struggling to see how a human (an interesting one or otherwise) would improve things here. Looks good as it is!

The little experience of judges I have would agree with you, and is something I have heard a few times (along with Photoshopping a plane or boat into a couple of my pictures). However, this looks great to me, it is an excellent black and white with a very interesting composition

Like it as it is,
Given its a scene that inspires peace and tranquility, I'm not sure adding people would enhance in any way
Its a lovely pic

I imagine it looks great as a print, the compression on screen will have lost a lot of detail in the small stones. Does it need Mr Miyagi doing the gardening? No I don't thinks so, but what do I know about camera clubs and their competitions? (not a lot)

I'm with the rest of them. Maybe if you actually found the gardener on the job but otherwise no need at all.

Maybe if you actually found the gardener on the job ... Good thing you didn't say game keeper - now that would add interest!

"It needs human interest" is one of those stock phrases used by Judges when they can't think of anything constructive to say....

However, in the occasional case and this comes from experience, such as a newspaper / magazine article, I learned, early on, that for the majority (99%) of photos used in print media the "human interest" aspect is essential. One example, of many, leaps to mind: "A burned out car in the alley behind my building, I got some great, in the words of the PE, snaps of the car using HP5 and the light and shadows. The PE said, this would be a perfect shot for a photo competition et al, but, as for a newspaper photo, it's required a person in the photo . Amazingly, I could have taken a few snaps with people walking by, looking in, etc ... but, didn't see the necessity , until later that afternoon . Cheers, Jack
