Both Fomapan 100, neither shot in great light. The choochoo was developed in Rodinal, probably 1:25 or 1:50, having been taken with a dodgy box camera. The hairyplane with a camera with a three-element lens coated lens, done semi-stand in Caffenol. Temperature started out at 20C, stop and fix warmed too - so probably more care than the first neg! So why is my Caffenol so grainy and unsharp? I thought the whole point of C-L was that it wasn't either. Full size pics on Flickr for closer inspection.

Have you had sharp pictures from the second camera before? Could it be the lens? Perhaps Fomapan doesn't react well to Caffenol?

It's the first film I've put through the second camera, though me not dismantling it may be a factor in the level of sharpness (in that I haven't buggered it up!). Should be OK, the pre-war version was used on a few lower-end Kodak Retinas. Looking online, people seem to have got good results with Foma 100 with various Caffenol formulas.
I'm at a loss.

I get similar levels of grain when I overexpose a frame.

It's definitely better on well exposed frames, but it's still not great.

Is your coffee Arabica or Robusta?

No need to get personal, old chap!
More seriously, it's the cheapest brand in Tescos. Maybe I should try Lidl?

Too many variables I think. Shoot a roll in consistent decent light, appropriately metered, in a camera you know performs. THEN start worrying if things aren't good.

As long as it's robusta you should be ok.
I don't bother warming the stop/fix, could you have over-warmed them? Or the c-l?
Did you give it a twiddle half-way through?
How long in the gloop? Did you add the benzowossname? If so, I wouldn't bother. Just a whiff of KBr.
Oh, and I hate to say it, but you were holding the camera upside down.

Oh, and I hate to say it, but you were holding the camera upside down. S Nobody loves a smartarse. Just saying. More seriously, I'm leaving it to stand for 60 mins. Perhaps I should twiddle at 30 mins? No Benzo in these as it was in date from, not years out of date.

I would - just four or five turns. Er, and they're back to front as well. S

See my previous remark for details. 😛
More seriously, I'll try that. If it doesn't work, it'll be back to Rodinal, I think, and find something else for 35mm. I do have some 510 pyro but I tend to shoot in summer and develop in winter, when the stuff has solidified on the shelf.
They were very quick scans for the porpoise of demonstrating a point...

Too many variables I think. Shoot a roll in consistent decent light, appropriately metered, in a camera you know performs. THEN start worrying if things aren't good. I'll try that again as the first time I didn't realise the instructions were for *anhydrous* sodium carbonate, not washing soda, so used about a third of what I should have...
