I know DanS is in my natal county, someone else too - maybe petrochemist? Anyway, I've only just found out that not only the old coastal defence batteries between Dovercourt and Harwich are no just being dragged out of the brambles but are actually open to the public.
A gallop round these was the highlight of my childhood holidays, I am so glad to see them coming back to life!

A gallop round these was the highlight of my childhood holidays, I am so glad to see them coming back to life! Yes very much my home turf, I've worked in the Harwich area for most of my life. I'd seen the clearing underway, but haven't visited it for around 5 years. My first visits were as a teenager, when we used to hang out in the underground tunnels... FWIW theres also a Napoleonic fort 'The redoubt' only about 1/4 mile from beaconhill - I've taken lots more photos at the redoubt which is also open to the public (on Sundays throughout the year & Thursday to Sunday in the summer) My visits are usually when it hosts reenactment displays. www.harwich-society.co.uk/maritime-heritage-trail/harwich-redoubt-fort/

Wow! I'd seen signs for the Redoubt, but I never realised it was anything like that!

Wow! I'd seen signs for the Redoubt, but I never realised it was anything like that! It is remarkably well hidden with all the housing surrounding it now. You can still see the sea from the rooftop emplacements, but I've not spotted it from the sea
