This is a New Zealand Railways Ja, photographed in Dunedin (not by me) in the 1960s. The rail gauge here is 3'6".

Wow, that cannot be much smaller than a standard gauge UK loco! I was minded to look it up. According to wikipedia 3' 6" gauge accounts for 70,000 miles of track in the world or 7.5% of track in service. This compares to standard gauge (as used in UK) of 450,000 miles or 54.9% of track in service.

Ja1274 is preserved in Dunedin - non running, unfortunately. It's in a glass structure next to the station. Ja1272 was scrapped in the late 1960s when its boiler failed.
