Until I was playing with the ringflash last year I hadn't realised that these never-watered pot plants outside the front door were fake. 274A1957.jpg by Pete, on Flickr much more obvious but seen from a couple of yards still quite convincing. 274A1958.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

I can't think of any similar examples. The fastest lenses I have are F2.8- one is macro that is always used stopped down and the other a 70-200 zoom which LR shows was used at F2.8 mainly for family photos at a distance so dof effects are due as much to focal length as the aperture. Everything else I have is F4 or slower, the slower lenses generally being telephoto. Having a think .. I am reasonable sure this Zoo picture (2014) was taken at F2.8 with the 70-200 at 200 mm in order to throw the foreground wire mesh out of focus, although the mesh can be seen in the background. It didn't otherwise need to have an exposure time of 1/800s. BV9R0295.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

I should have said my shots above, taken yesterday, were at f/1.7. Next time if I use this aperture, it's going to be camera on tripod!

Aperture wide open. Extreme narrow dof! Extremely short DOF reminds me of this shot through a microscope (again no aperture to play with). I actually used half a dozen stacked images to try & boost the DOF but high magnifications really reduce DOF. FWIW It's the ankle of a fly, & DOF of each shot would be best measured in something like microns House fly ankle by Mike Kanssen, on Flickr

Just now. At 300mm on my zoom, wide open isn't that wide! Squirrel by Nigel G, on Flickr
