Every so often I wonder if I'm getting old, but my continued non-interest in VW vans reassures me that I've still got a few years of 'youth' remaining. There's a definite "midlife crisis" vibe around most of these vans I see around. As long as they're not straddling both lanes on the road to Glencoe and doing about 30mph. That one got a seriously close pass .

If it truly has the range mentioned in the video then I hope they do well. I've experienced 'Range Anxiety' with our fleet of electric cars at work. Driving from Helensburgh to our Campbeltown campus (115 miles) in a car with a range of 120 miles is not fun. Couldn't you get one of those generators from Machine Mart and stick it in the boot. You would need a hole for the exhaust to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Perhaps the manufacturers have thought of this and prevent charging while the car is bing driven.

The far simpler thing to do is stop, stick it on a fast charger, grab a coffee/stretch your legs, and continue.

Hybrids that can charge themselves as they are driven are available but they wouldn't give organisations, particularly taxpayer funded ones, the carbon accounting they desire.

But ironically enough they recognise the Nigerian prince scam in their emails.

There used to be one in Inverary but it was broken the last time I went by. One of our fleet came back to Helensburgh from Bute with 21 miles range left on it. Our Oban Centre manager needs to come to Helensburgh next week but our charger is broken and the centre is closed for the Easter holiday so there's nobody around to charge it from a kitchen socket so she's looking at being able to get here, but not get home again.

As long as the toilets work Kintyre is not totally isolated. For those not in the the know the prettyish model village of Inverary is a toilet stop.

Do you use ChargePlace Scotland? The interactive map shows you current status of all network chargers and what's currently available.

I have, and it's useful to know, particularly if you are travelling around more urban areas but Argyll & Bute has really very few places to charge your car and if they're in use, or broken you're often in a place with no phone signal either. The infrastructure just doesn't support electric cars well here.

Just been reading up on the history of electric cars and it seems the first attempts are as early as 1832 a full fifty years before Benz started making petrol engine cars

"Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz" sounds a bit different when you realise Mercedes Benz was the daughter of the inventor of the carburator.
