In later years I used to agree to be available on Christmas Day and I always worked between Christmas and New Year. I don't recall every being phoned when I wasn't actually in the office. |

Whenever I worked Christmas Day, and there were a few, we seemed to always end up with a siege or a shooting and I ended up working longer!

I spent several Christmases at sea, and contrary to popular belief, the ship didn’t anchor up and we all had a party. My first ever Christmas away from home was on a VLCC sailing down the Persian Gulf. Weather was rather pleasant.

My first ever Christmas away from home was on a VLCC sailing down the Persian Gulf. Weather was rather pleasant. My first Christmas away from home was spent in the Royal Artillery HQ in Woolwich: my first Christmas away form the UK was in Baghdad, at the start of the Iran Iraq war. Didn't need Christmas fireworks - there was a busy SAM battery 500 metres down the road! |
