Fat is acceptable on a piece of rump steak. I picked a pre-packed steak up at the supermarket, it looked ok. I've just opened it to cook for Spike, turned the thing over and it's little more than a slab of fat with a bit of meat attached. I trimmed the fat off and weighed it...87grams out of a 225 gram steak, that's more than a third. Am I right to complain?

Copy your complaint to Which especially if you are a member. Also try a national newspaper of your own persuasion; there might be just a slight chance that they pick up on it. Rump steak should be marbled with fat. A slab attached suggests incompetent butchering and also a misdescription of product. The latter of course is an offence of which local trading standards might be interested. Steak should be butchered across the grain but in most cases slabs of fat run parallel to the grain.

Sticking a layer of fat underneath is one of the sneaky ways some supermarkets try to make money. It's fat on meat, and skin on fish - I've sometimes bought a nice plump bit of salmon only to find that it's actually a skinny arsed piece resting on a few folds of skin, as if the bugger was trying to have a nap!

That strikes me as wilful, premeditated fraud.
Edit - As does the afore mentioned steak.
