After my recent PC problems I'm having to reload software, images and music etc. My current problem is how to get the XP emulator running in a "virtual machine" in order to run Picture Publisher; I've been using PP since the early 1990s from V 2 up to 10.1 when Micrografx got swallowed by Corel, and at almost 90 don't fancy climbing any new learning curves.
Downloads of PP and the necessary emulator and VM are free, however the explanations availble on line seem useless, I never had this problem the last time I did any major setting up a few years back. (I note that they now offer the nedesary VM and XP emulator to run on Win 10 as well as for 7 & 8)

Sorry, no idea. It sounds horrendously complicated. I suppose you need to be sure that the new machine will run the VMware under win 10, I know the PC (a 2015 Levono) which I moved from win 8.1 to win 10 a year ago now takes an absolute age to start up. It is OK once it is going and finished with all the stuff it has to do in startup but I daren't touch anything until it is ready. The other day it was too slow to respond to my typing the password and put me through the whole mandatory password change procedure (grrr) instead of just asking me to try again. I can't remember if Win10 imposes access conditions. These days for macs, and I think Win 11, programs have to have permissions to access hard disk, USB ports etc. The installer (of the VMware I expect) should ask. Otherwise, if you did this before on Win 8 or earlier it should be the same process.

Try running PP in compatibility mode.... Right-click the program. Click Properties. Switch to the Compatibility tab. Check Run this program in compatibility mode for. Windows XP is no longer available from this dropdown, so select Windows Vista, the oldest operating system.

It's not a new machine, it's about 7 years old, I had a similar problem when it was new but got it sorted, just can't remember how. Looks like Andy's suggestion works, now have to figure out making it permanent instead of doimg the compatibilty tab, it used to be automatic before this crash, I'm used to using it from the task bar (lazy *******)
