Roly is my latest toy, thanks to a Christmas gift of an LCE voucher, and money from the out-laws. flic.kr/p/2pshAd7flic.kr/p/2psbfXiflic.kr/p/2psgEB3He's obviously had a tough life but the lens looks OK, the shutter speeds all seem to work, as does the iris and focus, so I'm hopeful. I'll test the wind mech with a spare roll I've kept for such purposes (from back when you could afford to sacrifice a film!) before I shot a roll, especially as someone has mashed the spring clip that keeps the paper right to the film: flic.kr/p/2psfYKnI think that is probably worth persevering with, though I will see if I can track down a spare. When I looked at it the vf hood wouldn't pop up, but that seems to be because the wrong side was folded down first as now I've swapped them it pops up every time, matron. Right, better leave it at that, and hope for some sunlight.

Oh, looks fun.
How is the mirror? My Automat could do with having the mirror (s) re silvered, there are two mirrors in mine one for the WLF and a second one that flips down in the hood for eye level use.

The mirror doesn't look too bad, although the focussing screenn has lost a corner. We'll see when I get it out in daylight (and Roly).

Can you post another picture after it's had some TLC? It looks similar to one that I once tried to show a young lady how to use about 40 years ago, after she had inherited it. I have a suspicion that she threw it away soon afterwards.

I wasnt really thinking about smartening him up, well, not until I see how well he works anyway, but you never know. There's a chap on a Retina group on Fartbook who's worked wonders on Retinas of similar age, so I might just take his advice.
I took advantage of unexpected time in the sun on Friday to load him up. He's actually really easy to load, possibly the simplest 120 camera I've come across. Even better, though based on only two frames, the wind mech looks as though the spacing is spot on needing by where the numbers fit in the red window. Must get a bit of black tape on him, though, as I only have one red window cover. As long as I don't go below 1/5th or try to use the self timer, the speeds all seem OK as well. I'm waiting for the gotcha as this far it looks as though I've got something good for a lot less than usual. My money is on that mashed springy bit.

Looking again at the MST, I think I would be concerned about it scoring the film with a misshapen edge.

Either that or not rolling it straight and jamming the feed. We shall see! Worth the price of a roll of Fomapan to see, I reckon.

Old Standards do tend to be very cheap for Rolleis, yet they seem to be reliable. A lot less complex than later models, but still quite a lot of fun.

A non-coupled focusing Voigtlander Brillant is the closest I've come to a TLR up until now, so it's been an experience thus far. It's now been around up to 7 shots and the indexing still seems to work... just got to get to 12 and develop it!

Prices for them are all over the place, and oddly not necessarily anything to do with condition. I really want a Voigtlander Superb, which really is. But good ones are silly money. Brillants and Brilliants are much more sensible, and fun, if not exactly top end stuff. But I do think Old Standards are the sweet spot for value.

Negs hanging in bathroom, and they look good. I think I scored me a fully functional Rollei for £79.99 of other peoples money!
