Silence. After the screaming and moaning on Breakfast TV it is bliss

Luckily I do not make New year resolutions. I have bought (sort of) a used Fuji XT-4 and a Tamron 18-300 lens for it. Only sort of bought it, as waiting on confirmation from Wex on how much they will give for my PX stuff, which if it is close to the online valuation they have given, it should be a nice chunk off the price. I went to look at it yesterday and the salesman talked me out of buying the T5 which has saved a lot of money.

Well my resolute vow has failed spectacularly I’ve bought into Pentax Pair of K5’s and several lenses including the 2.8 zooms (16-50mm & 50-135mm) plus 4 limited primes. Oh, and a pentax angle finder too!! In one fell swoop I’ve bought my allocated quota for 2024!!

There is a 18-135 or a 16-85 but they aren't f2.8 The limited primes are nice, in fact nicer than nice.

There is a 18-135 or a 16-85 but they aren't f2.8 The limited primes are nice, in fact nicer than nice. My bad sorry Should have written 50-135mm - just amended my error, sorry Both zooms had the poor SDM motors, so I’ve reverted both to screwdrive, the lenses are noisier but the AF is slightly quicker The 70mm prime is my favourite Equates to 105mm in FF But it’s so so tiny I grabbed the 15, 21, 40 & 70mm, plus the Da 35 & 50mm. My reason for buying was A) The weather sealing (zooms) B) The smaller lenses My patience finally ran out with canons offering for aps-c. I bought into the EF-s line up but canon never offered decent primes, so then bought into the canon M line, again canon offered the 22 (35mm) 32 (50mm) then phased it out Now we are offered the RF-s line The lenses are slow (6.3) and the pop up flash is practically useless (GN 6!!) and battery life sucks!! I decided after being a canon user for more than 30yrs things were not going to change. Canon seems hell bent on steering it’s users to full frame, but I simply don’t want the bulk, weight or expense nor do I want the pitiful slow consumer zooms with 7.1 max aperture. Early days with the Pentax, but I really like the interface . Makes a lot of sense. The AF is obviously a huge step backwards coming from canon, but so far that is my only criticism. I

Pentax is a learning curve that's a pleasant stroll up a hill. As you say the autofocus is somewhat tardy but the rest of the shooting experience makes up for that. There are those who say only proper photographers appreciate Pentax, but it would be inappropriate of me to agree 🤓👍

Well now we are into the Chinese new year I resolve not to buy any more instruments this year (possibly ever) and to work on selling a few.

I’m currently using the K5’s with a limited on each plus another limited in my pocket Fun fact, the K5 is roughly the same size as canons much touted smallest ever dslr the SL1 and SL2, yet has a real prism, 100% viewfinder and is weather sealed The fact the K5 also has image stabilisation built in and off camera flash control via the pop up blew me away. I’m only shooting jpegs, with centre spot AF , but the results I’m getting make me grin like a kid again.

Funnily enough I've just had my Canon 7D converted to 720mm infrared, as I felt the images were very noisy. At similar iso I've always thought Pentaxes handled the noise better ( having had K50/K500/K30/K3...) I've done some juggling and wheeler dealing and I might be getting a KF...might/might not! ( yes I know I want to!)

Don't forget you can use older K mount lenses relatively easily.

Yes Also the viewfinders are the same size across the board I had to buy a pair of correction lenses and quickly found out all Pentax DSLR’s use the same size eyecup!! By contrast I have had to buy 4 different style dioptric correction lenses to fit different canon bodies.

Don't forget you can use older K mount lenses relatively easily. And M42, T2, adaptall2... I was careless with my old K7 & fitted a adaptall lens with a Rioch mount fitted. The mount won't come off again (the Ricoh pin is a well known issue). The K7 is now adaptall only - at least that's not as limiting as a fixed mount lens would have been. My K5ii is currently my most used camera, used just last night for a macro session at our photo workshop

( yes I know I want to!) what a coincidence, I asked a similar question on the Pentax forum regarding having the K5 converted to monochrome. Burning off the Bayer layer on the sensor. I’m told this would give results on par with the K1 (FF) with better low light detail.

Have a nosey at the camera reviews on the Pentax Forums. The 5ii is supposed to be a big improvement over the 5, it ironed out issues that the 5 had.
