It's been sitting in its case for years, and smells a bit funky, but the rangefinder and shutter both work, and the meter reacts to light. The rangefinder and lens could do with a clean, but overall this is a nice unmolested camera, from 1962. Now, I'm considering transplanting the shutter from my other, newer Kiev, which has a non working rangefinder, into the Contax II I bought recently.

Hi John,
The Kiev 4 has slightly thicker shutter ribbon than the Contax II. There are issues with trying to use Kiev escapement gears in the shutter escapement assembly as the gear tooth cutting is slightly different, and at some point Arsenal altered the number of teeth so they will no mesh with the Zeiss originals. Most of the body and back castings can be interchanged, however not so for the Kiev 4 as the back design was altered and the tripod bush moved to the camera body rather than the camera back.
However a Contax mechanism will fit a Kiev 4, as will all the chrome parts, to make a 'Kievtax' 4.

I could, of course, try to repair the Contax shutter - but as well as the ribbons and side straps being broken, I suspect that someone has been into it before, and upset the timing of the shutter gears.

Yesterday, I cleaned up the lens on this camera. Its quite simple, as there is no focus helical involved. The old grease on the diaphragm setting mechanism had turned into a claggy wax. The only fiddly part was replacing the roller which provides the click for diaphragm setting. I followed the instructions on the archived Kiev Survival Site (this lens is not quite the same as mine).
Today, I cleaned the camera inside and out, using window cleaner on cotton buds. It has now almost lost the smell of ancient camera cases.

Here is the latest Kiev, with its relations. The Contax has a wrecked shutter, and the newer Kiev (on the right) has a faulty rangefinder.

Just to pre-empt Zou, I've poked Ed Trzoska about my Contax III.

He's also semi-retired now, so probably going slower. Luckily I don't need it, it's a toy!

I feel so tempted, with my wicked sense of humour, to post a response thread entitled "The chicken pixies brought me another Kiev"......
