Imagine if you will that I've gone totally mad and invited you all to dinner 'next Wednesday'. The invitation has gone out today - Sunday. Please select the date that you imagine you would be dining at my gaff.

I'm intrigued as to what underlies this.

I'm intrigued as to what underlies this. It seems rather transparent to me!

Of course it's the 25th! The 1st November would be a week on Wednesday.

Same but google says 1st Nov. If I meant 1/11 I'd say a week on Wednesday rather than next Wednesday.

Could this be an English/American thing? I think that would explain why Google has it wrong! Very kind of you to invite us all Kath, but I've got to take down our clubs photo exhibition in the morning, which doesn't leave time for getting up to Scotland. So I'm afraid I can't make it When I've had to drive up to scotland for work 7 hours to the border is generally fairly good going!

This is not the result I was hoping for.
My middle child has passed her driving test this weekend and wants to get together for a celebratory meal. The only time that she said she was available was 'next Wednesday'.
Now my logic is that the 25th October would be THIS Wednesday, and that next Wednesday would be the week afterwards. Because if the 25th is NEXT Wednesday, when is THIS Wednesday? It can't be the Wednesday that we've just had because that's last Wednesday.
A straw poll among my other friends split the decision about 50/50. You lot have skewed the results way out of my favour. No dinner for any of you.

Any chance that the wine's still on offer?

When someone says next ???day I assume it will be the next occurrence of that day. However it would normally say “next Wednesday, the 25th” to avoid any confusion. On the occasions I travelled to Scotland for work I was required to fly, it didn’t cost the company anything.

The google results suggest you are right, and there were plenty links to follow explaining it, but I'd still have turned up a week early . Although in better news I'm usually finished work about 4pm and you're only an hour and a half away so I can make it either week .

Probably cheaper than driving or the train anyway.....when I looked at travel to Oxford it was £155 to get the train or £35 to fly to Luton.
